Every single piece of media created today is derivative. Some are more so than others. The Squid Game is more the latter and feels too familiar past blood game narratives like Battle Royale and Hunger Games to feel fresh. Other weak points include a B plot that fizzles out and ridiculously hammy scenes with the VIPs. That being said, the acting is excellent, the characters are interesting, and the cinematography is well done, but not breathtaking. What really killed the show for me was the ending where the MC abandons his plans to move to California and live near his daughter to return to another Squid Game. Sorry, that was not believable for me.
