No disrespect to all the turning red fans out there, but I dislike this movie to the core. The thing I hate is how in some trailers they make the movie seem so interesting but when you watch the actual movie you have to wonder why you even bothered. I'm not going to lie, having the ability to turn into a red panda is so cool it's not even funny, but I was disappointed at how it mentioned the whole puberty and crushing on boys stuff, I was hoping for more, like for the movie to be focused entirely on the panda thing, not puberty and boys.
Onto the characters. First of all, I absolutely hate Mei. At the beginning, she seemed cool until it got to the middle. She's rude, disrespectful, and very selfish. She claims how she has to be perfect, but really she doesn't. A parent would never ask too much of their children. They may be a little over protective, and there will be embarrassing moments involving you're parents, but make it known that they only want the best for you, they want you be safe and grow to be a successful person in life. And seeing how Mei is with her mother, feeling like she's got it all bad, I am truly disgusted. Just because she's a teenage doesn't mean she can do whatever she wants. She's just a child. And one thing she says is going to the concert with her friends is their first step into womanhood. Like, YOU'RE ONLY 13, YOU'RE NOT 15, YOU AIN'T 18. You got a long way to go before you reach adulthood, and you're just gonna have to accept it and deal with it.
And another I don't like is the "crush on every hot boy Mei sees" parts of the movies. I've never been into boys, and when I see that she's being just a typical teenager, possibly wanting to get into a relationship with a boy she finds cute, I just have to wonder what's the point? Yeah that's how teenager girls are, but does it have to be one of things that Mei is worried about? Like she's jumping from one boy to the next. The Daisy-mart employee, the kid at school, and now the lead singer of a band. Like Mei, just settle down, you're only thirteen, focus on the important things, focus on you future, being successful in life, instead of wasting your time mooning over boys that may not even like you. Like c'mon.
Mei may be an average teenager, and there are things that happened she didn't deserve, like her mom delivering the pads, and calling out the employee in front of her and everyone. I can't imagine the embarrassment! But if there's one person I feel sorry for the most, it's going to be Mei's mother.
She might be a typical, protective mom. But she carries a lot of love for Mei and wants the best for her, and her Mei to be so self-centered and unable to see that is just unbelievable. No one is expecting you to be perfect, and to upset of not being allowed to go to a concert, when there's plenty more opportunities in the future, is pretty insane if you ask me.
