Only watched the first episode so this should be taken with a grain of salt* I’ve read the comics and watched the movie multiple times and really appreciate this series. Unfortunately, the first episode was awful and I probably won’t finish the series ever because of it, although I would like to see how other voice actors do. Firstly, the animation is fine but definitely not anything special, which is fine. Like, be fair it is just a Netflix animated show at the end of the day and you can’t really expect better. That’s probably the only passable aspect of this show, that and the source material has enough charm where even a poor display has some carry through. That being said, there is a lot to be desired. The dialogue is terrible, like shockingly bad. Again, considering the source material is great the dialogue is awful. The only dialogue that’s good is the stuff they directly took from the books. Also, the worst part about the dialogue overall is the timing and delivery, for such an all star cast of actors I respect so much, they’re all doing a really mediocre job, atleast for the first episode, there is a good chance that a lot of the returning actors do perform better than what was shown in episode 1. The delivery and the show as a whole has this anime feel which I honestly hate. I find it distracting and it’s probably not helped by the fact I really don’t like anime and always appreciated Scott pilgrim being a combination of a cartoon, anime, and generally being it’s own thing. For example they have an anime intro to a story centred around a bassist in an indie rock band which is just wrong if you ask me. In short, very poor dialogue and delivery with in my opinion are mixed creative choices. Wouldn’t recommend but again, I have only seen the first episode and it might get a lot better and I’d have to assume it get a little better.
