I would say: if you haven't watched the original Winx Club, you can watch this as a solitary show with no association to its predecessor (because if you do, 1) you will be extremely disappointed because for some reason a kids' show has a much interesting storyline than the adult live version, and 2) before someone says they don't have sufficient budget to create good effects, just stop because you can still produce a well-written storyline according to your allocated budget and still make it successful. And a lot of independent filmmakers out there are proof of this).
As a project on its own: I think it is fine but you feel like it is empty because the characters are without depth (except for some) and neither was the story. The plotting for the villains is good. But they didn't fully utilise its potential. For a magic show (predominantly fairy magic), it did not focus too much on their magic (or any magic at all) but more on military strength (which confused me to this date because you can get this from any war-related film so why channel it into this story. Like make it as a part of it, not majority of it). And more often than not, the Specialist (which is one of the soldiers/army units of this realm) is the star of the show rather than the fairies themselves.
And unlike the original (where you get to discover worlds, their histories, interesting characters with amazing fashion senses, and a heck ton of magic from the fairies, pixies, witches, and other magical creatures) - with this version you get a war story where the fairies and specialist are used as a tool to fight against the bad guys while the main character tries to find for her real parents. They took the best part of Winx Club and turned it into something so American (even though most of the cast were British) that it is barely even a universal Winx anymore.
Don't get me started with the Second Season where they introduced you to this parasite (which is like from Alien or Alien VS Predator or something cause they are so uncreative) and murdered the two characters that carried the show which are both of the headmistresses. Also, why call it Winx if the fairies are not flying, lord. All they did was stand there with their wings, and it only appeared twice or three times.
Idk, they just did the show dirty. Should have just left it to the Italians to do it. Another perfect example of what happens when Americans try to make films or shows these days cause most of them to suck. The same case goes for Cowboy Bebop. But the cast did a great job in acting their roles (And for their sake, I give this show a 2-star rating). It is just the writers didn't.
And just stopped with the forced "I am a teen and I am sexual and smoking joints or doing underage drinking cause I have issues or cool" thing. Like honestly - what has filmmaking come to that they have to feature this all the time? And these people are supposed to be teens. The reason why Winx Club was well loved was for the characters and how well they handled themselves, and how supportive they can be to their friends and family without the influence of drugs, alcohol, free sex, and angst. Idk, this rant will never end, but just gonna end it here. If you think that most teens are actively sexual and smoking, you are wrong. There are a lot of teens from all over the world that are not following these free sex-smoking-underage drinking-angst things. Another reason why Winx Club is universally love because anyone from any parts of the world can watch while Fate: The Winx Saga can only be watched by a certain demographic.
