I didn't have too many expectations for this movie, but here's what I think (spoilers ahead):
the plot was pretty original from what I could tell, especially the end resolution. But I do think it lacked depth. Why choose that particular family, how the villain emerged as this devil, all these things are left to speculation.
madhavan's character also really pisses me off. he is NOT a good villain, honestly. I was expecting a cunning and clever villain. He's just sadistic. That's about as deep his character goes.
In terms of plot development, there was the start, and then there was the end. That's it. Quite a bit of it in between wasn't fully relevant to the plot and was just... there. I feel like the torment the family went through in the middle of the movie were mostly filler scenes, hardly anything was done to advance the plot. I was getting tired of seeing the family so helpless, because that was literally all that was happening:
He tormented them and they were helpless.
Then he tormented them some more, and they remained helpless.
All of that for more than half the movie.
It only starts to pick up after Janvi attempts to kill her brother. The end was better than I'd expected it to be.
... And don't even get me started on how unrealistic everything was. I understand some parts may be unrealistic because I mean, it's a horror/drama movie. But having an eight year old's head smashed til he suffers a concussion, with no medical assistance (not even a makeshift bandage) and then later fall from a roof and then he somehow STILL speaks coherently??? not to mention the fact that Kabir somehow managed to ride a bike in a forest while he has a knife through his hand and a stab wound in his leg. He also single-handedly fights three posessed women who ideally would not be stopped.
... And DEFINITELY don't get me started on the dramatic audio effects, like when janvi was laughing and it kept echoing and there was dramatic overlay. I could NOT take it seriously after that. It reminded me of overly dramticized bollywood shows that our grandmothers watch. And the "Shaitaan" song actually made me cringe.
The movie was engaging, but not in a good way. More like, you just kept watching to understand what the actual hell was going on.
The movie is nowhere near good. I mean, Good concept, terrible writing. Character's lacked depth, plot lacked depth, and too many loopholes and unrealism.
