I didn't care for this book at all. I feel like I missed something cuz everyone I speak to says they loved it.
I'm Hispanic so when I saw the title, I thought it was going to be about the struggle of being expected to stay home and take care of/be with your family vs wanting to leave home and see what else the world has to offer. But it was really just a complex Julia had for her sister, which still could have been interesting if Julia wasn't so gosh darn annoying.. she hated everything except for the manic pixie white boy she magically finds at a bookstore.
The blurb describes this book as a mystery but there's hardly any "detective work". She vaguely gets some info about her sister's death at the beginning of the book and we don't really learn anything else towards the end of the book when the author remembers this was a plot point.
This book was also riddled with stereotypes and treated Spanish like Dora the explorer, explaining simple words.
I'm hoping the movie adaptation will help me see what everyone loved about it. I really feel like there was something interesting here and it was just butchered... I wish I had borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.
