First, I have to say that I expected a brilliantly done film and found the reality greatly disappointing. While this 2019 version can be credited with beautiful cinematography, costuming, film locations/sets, and some good acting moments, overall, the film could be described as a stream of disembodied sound bites. Rarely during the rush from one “scene” did the audience have the opportunity to connect with the characters before they were jerked into the next loosely connected “scene”. Without narration, which would have been impossible to do given the discontinuity, and if you didn’t already know the story from Alcott’s book or one of the previous film adaptations, the story would be lost to you. Additionally, the editing and directing were visibly poor. I actually could see starts of scenes when the actors were placed and ready and stepped into their role in that scene as though we were watching the film be filmed. Lastly, while Little Women 2019 has an impressive cast and director, some actors were miscast in their roles. Given what I and many other film goers have written about this film, I cannot fathom what the MSM critics were thinking in their high praise. It pains me to say this about a film made by a director and actors I admire, the film is mediocre at best. The 1994 version is far superior.
