#JohnWick4 Speechless! I’ve been thinking of the best iteration of superlatives for this literally breathtaking motion picture masterpiece! So John seeks refuge at the Osaka Continental after killing on the NY Continental in Chapter 3:Parabellum. There’s a price on his head. BOOM All hell is let loose when Marchese de Gramont, the supreme power who now controls the order, hires a retired assassin, Caine, played by the legendary Donnie Yen, to finally put an end to “the problem” called #JohnWick
This sets off a multi-dimensional man hunt for #Johnwick with the blind Cain at the heart of the ‘search and destroy’ mission.
Now in terms of what plays out screen, for those who have seen it and haven’t seen it, whatever is beyond spectacular is what the fight scenes are. Wow!
Marchese De Gramont is a ruthless and vile villain always clad in the finest suits with lavish accoutrements of wealth in the frame each time you see him. His despicable behavior can literally be framed as art. It will irk you. Some reviewer said, he’s all fashion and NO class.
Every bit of this film is given utmost attention. The dialogue is sparse but full of soul. The lines had me gasping! Now I call this film a STUNT’TRAVAGANZA because holy smokes the moves were simple amazing. The set-pieces for all the fights were all visceral. It was nonstop!
Now for my favorite part! This is easily the best looking #johnwick film in the franchise. Dan Laustsen is the DOP and boy are his images so magical. The use of rich and delicately saturated primary colors warm the senses giving the film an air of sophistication and seminality.
There’s a scene where Winston walks down the gallery past some huge Baroque paintings to get to the villain. In that that walk, we given a glimpse of the vision of the DOP as he takes us on this artistic journey. It’s like a reinforcement of the fact that there’s a certain art in violence - violence for a higher purpose - ‘Liberty Leading the People’
Painting by Eugène Delacroix - A vivid portrait of the soul of the film.
This #JohnWick4review delves into the soul of the film, focusing on our collective pursuit of freedom from forces that limit us from reaching our maximum selves. Beyond avenging his wife and dogs demise, #Johnwick is mortally bound to find freedom.
