Understated, beautifully written undiscovered gem about WW1. Brave taking a title from a WIlfred Owen poem but Hill is a good enough writer to get away with it. Writes in a very controlled way, lots of detail but never forced and never just about showing off her reserch. It's a crowded field but this is a way better book than Birdsong, which was higely overrated. Excellent.
