The idea is very good. Boss lady needs her assistant to marry her to avoid deportation.
But oh my Goodness!
I was led to believe that Margaret was an evil boss, but at no point did I see her be mean, really mean. So her assistant Eric brings her the coffee, so what? Most assistants I know are happy to do that so they can be close to a genius mind. Why else does he hate her? There is nothing tangible in her attitude to make me want to hate her too.
At no point did I see Margaret deserve the hate the whole office was giving her. So again, very confused on the free hatred given to her. As a matter of fact, I think she was bullied by all the people that feared her.
Her assistant Eric lacks any form of gentleman behaviour. What assistant would want to publicly ashame the woman he's been working tirelessly for and ask her to get to her knees and not help her up?! Honesty, no man I know would do that.
At no point is she respected and celebrated for her hard work and achievements. She's vilified, and I am still not sure why.
And the last phrase of the movie is from an employee "Eric, show her who is the boss". Oh common! She was never really the boss throughout the film! She was bullied and hated by Eric and her employees.
I got excited to see a real boss lady film, but this film is far from that. At no point was any other person ashamed more than the "boss lady" herself.
The only thing I would save is sweet nana. She's awesome. Apart from that this is a very macho film that humiliates powerful women (as if we had many to begin with), coming from a female film director. If you're reading this, Anne, I will watch your films again, but I'm hoping to be more impressed.
