Although I did not like some of the writing at first - the platitudes - and I think Jon could have been developed more, I think that I now understand the choice to do this. Jon was not being real. He was trying to be and create something he was not. He was pretending. When he met the guys in the elevator, I think he was already not doing well.
This show is a rollercoaster. Sometimes too much for me. So many really good things and then really difficult. But I love that a group of people choose to remain committed to one another even through the ups and downs of life.
Instead of cancelling out each other after bad choices or horrible circumstance, they show up for each other. This has to happen often with all the ups and downs. Not sure how realistic this is. But I am caught being really grateful they do. Touched emotionally. I think this is because they go thru unimaginable emotion and a very bumpy rides which I think represents life. Grief and the journey of life and relationship is not a straight line.
I also love that this show focuses on men getting help for their mental health or what happens when they do not. I think mental health in men is not talked about enough. This is also complicated by racial expectations. Such a lot to take on.
I so want these characters to win. But there is so much they come up against including the pandemic, a struggling world, the unhealthy habits of others, and their own weaknesses. It is unbelievable.
So this show is not perfect. But there are some beautiful moments and ideas. I appreciate anyone who takes on relationship and mental wellness.
