A masterclass in movie making - script writing, storytelling, acting, camera work, editing , lighting - flawless and gripping. Oscars very well deserved. Language was of no consequence as story was eternal and universal - social schisms and the hypocrisy of the elite , the angst of the ' domestics' brigade barely concealed , gossamer thin n fragile veneer of deference which falls apart in a split second of dysfunctionality. Disturbing reality of the served and those who serve - feudal nature underlying modern day slavery of a kind. No heroes or heroines or villains - everyone is a shade of grey. Modern day fable which sends out a message without laying it down as a testament or moralising - you get the message loud n clear and it's as old as time - hard work is your only bet to a good life. Forget shortcuts. Now, where have we heard that one before ?!

Frank confession - wasn't too keen on seeing the movie as I knew the outlines of the story having read about the protagonist many years ago. My thinking was 'what could the movie possibly accomplish with a known story' and the second misconception was a sceptical ' Hrithik Roshan as a poor but mathematically gifted Bihari'? Since the family was keen on seeing the movie, I tagged along albeit reluctantly. How wrong I was on both counts ! The film was outstanding on many fronts : Firstly the lack of artificial gloss and teflon like veneer most Bollywood films have in recounting the trials and tribulations of real life heroes. This was I think the standout feature of this film which is why I found it utterly captivating and engrossing. When there's anyway so much of drama and spirit in a person's life story, if it's glammed up it loses credibility and becomes just another flick. Thankfully, this film is down to earth and avoids melodrama. Hrithik Roshan - with this film just proved that he is the Amitabh Bacchan of the next era.There seems to be an endless and limitless ability to emote - anybody, any subject, any environment. The best tribute to an actor is when he enters the character he's playing with such consummate artistry that one forgets the actor in him. And that is amazing particularly for someone like HR who subsumed his extraordinary looks, carriage and starry demeanor to take on a persona which is completely his polar opposite. Hrithik's role stays with you long after you've left the theatre. I suspect, will linger for a long time. Rarely, does one come across a movie such as this. It's a priceless gem hiding under the grime and dirt unearthed by the makers to bring light and joy into our lives.
