Scorsese.... 50+ years making movies and he's still got it. It's such a wonderful addition to his filmography with him making a Western... AND a horror film!
This is the most disturbing film I've seen by Scorsese, this is him making something in the vein of Mississippi Burning or Come and See, one of those movies where you see human beings doing things to each other you just cannot fathom.
Leonardo DiCaprio giving an excellent performance in a rare villain role, here he plays a complete idiot who has no concept of HOW vile his actions are which makes him scarier. And Robert De Niro giving yet another gem of a performance in a Scorsese film, here as an absolute monster who puts on a warm avuncular face as he's destroying human beings. It's a frightening character but De Niro is a pleasure to watch here.
The overall production of this movie, the cinematography, the art direction, the costumes, etc.. especially when watching it on the big screen, it's such an incredible sense of being transported to another time and place. This is that Gangs of New York level of Scorsese historical film, a real cut above, like stepping into a time machine.
Not the mind-blowing best movie of 2023 like I was hoping but it's a DAMN good film! Scorsese making a historical crime horror film here that's certainly one of a kind. Intense, horrifying, tragic with superb performance and incredible production values.... one of the best movies of the year for sure.
