If you're like me, and thought, George RR Martin wrote for that game 😮, now that's GOTTA be a story worth suffering through the most joyless and miserable combat system in gaming history to see, well prepare to be disappointed.
We all know, as did I, that Fromsoftware designs their games to be progress gated to elite skill level gamers, and gives no option to adjust difficulty, if you're not in the club, go to hell. I knew this when I purchased the game, but I love open world story driven RPG's more than anything, so decided to sacrifice my time and happiness to the combat system, in order to see what wonders the story had in store. So far, I'm level 78, have explored a massive amount of the map, have beaten multiple bosses, both side bosses and "storyline 😐" bosses, and have yet to see anything that even resembles an actual story. Pretty much you pick a class, create your character, and your mission is become Elden Lord. No narrative outside of the opening scene, character interactions range from trivial to meaningless, no choices beyond which direction to explore, and what enemies to fight. It's just not there. And no, a story and lore are not the same things.
What is there is one of the most beautifully crafted environments I've seen in any game. I mean it is spectacular. Had this environment and the art and design that went into it been accompanied by an actual story, with characters and substance and just anything beyond fight, level up, get new stuff, fight some more, my God this game would be unmatched. It would be worth suffering through the hours and hours of combat that is difficult just because. But the story is nowhere to be found.
Personal enjoyment, Zero Stars. 0/10. Waste of money and time
The extra 3*'s I rated this with is out of respect for the design and art that went into this game. But yeah, it's basically the most beautifully crafted death arena ever made. No point in anything other than beat up whatever you can, level up, beat up more stuff. Fairly hollow experience for my taste.
*The moment I find an actual story, just anything to give playing the game some level of substance, or point to playing it other than "Git Gud", this rating will quickly go to 5*'s
