The movie "Nilacholey Kiriti" moves around the popular bengali detective Kirity Roy, created by writer Nihar Ranjan Gupta, who is trying to solve the criminal activities and murders happening in Puri (Nilachol). Through the journey in crime-solving with Kiriti (Indranil) and his newly married wife Krishna (Arunima), the directior Anindya Bikash Datta, creates the dense mist of mysteries and then carefully untangles the knots. Though initially the movie revolves around same plot points and repetitive dialogues, yet as the plot grows, the mystery thickens and the director succeeds in grabbing back the vibe of the movie.
The movie brings out some bold issues of modern times and analyzes complex human characteristics and deals with them prudently without being judgmental. Most importantly, the director gives the audience ample scope to interpret the clues by themselves, thus the audience can feel the thrill of solving the riddles alongside the sharp-minded sleuth. Also, the best part of the movie is its ending(s) (yes, I am using plural!) where the creativity of the writer and talent of the director both matches perfectly in phase and magnetize the attention of the viewers till the credits roll.
Though there are some plot-holes, lack of explanation behind some plot points, yet the director excellently manages to deliver the spirit of a perfect detective movie. Sometimes there are amateurish or over-acting by the actors, yet overall performance of all of the casts can easily meet the audiences' expectations. The soundtrack is worth mentioning, comprising of traditional thriller-music track blended with music and song of classical and Odissi genre. Also, using the Odia language for the Odia characters (instead of Bengalizing/Hindizing those dialogues) brings diversity and realness to the plot.
Finally, a moviegoer deciding whether to watch the movie, can be assured that Nilacholey Kiriti is one of the very good novel-based Bengali detective movie in recent times.
