I can't say enough about this book which I highly recommend to anyone who has, might have or has family or friends with addictions or "semi-addictions". Dr. Bishop clearly and interestingly answers 64 questions that his clients, and my clients (I'm also a psychologist) and others, often ask, noting that there is rarely time to answer fully in the therapy hour. So I found it fantastic that this book does just that; with knowledge, insight and humor. He offers the latest science and sociology, noting something that rarely gets mentioned: Natural Recovery. Yes, most people with addictions do recover on their own (or perhaps with the help of a book like this). And he addresses all different ways that people change in terms of abstinence, moderation and points in between; and different ways people find help including those less known beyond the AA/12-Step model, including but not limited to SMART Recovery, Moderation Management, Woman for Sobriety, LifeRing and others. The subtitle: 64 Questions and Answers to Help You Change an Addictive or Semi-Addictive Behavior expands the definition of addiction to cover "semi-addictions" not usually found in the therapist's manual (read it and find out!). Often he says "it depends" and thus he offers a deeper understanding of the issues involved. I have it on my list of suggested readings for my clients and note that it's also on the SMART Recovery suggested reading list. Thank you Dr. Bishop for sharing your extensive knowledge in such a clear and useful way.
