The CBS Evening News’ producers have cheapened the national debate fundamental to our democracy. From the opening “Breaking News” signature phrase, which ushers in nothing “breaking” at all, to the myopic choice of stories intended to inform Americans while they ignore much of political life outside our borders, they have designed a newscast for the lowest common denominator. Instead of the Tiffany network, it’s now Filene’s Basement.
