Although this book is nearly two decades old, the takes and thoughts of Eric S. Raymond are as incisive and interesting as when they were first written - this is a man as entrenched in the industry as is possible, and his words are wise! His predictions are interesting and I've come out the other side of The Cathedral and the Bazaar with a richer and deeper understanding of not only the implications of open source, but the pre-requisites for a succesful deployment of such a model of development.
Raymond is most certainly a staunch American Libertarian and while this can leak into the book at times he purposely puts politics aside for the most part and delivers the 'CatB' with a logical and plain approach that appeals to the reasonability of everyone. It's a great ride of a book and I'd happily and wholeheartedly reccomend it, you can get nice copies on Ebay last I checked.
