I had always been interested in true crime, but could never stand to watch the standard documentaries that you see advertised everywhere - they're too slow paced and uninteresting, with monotone-speaking guests and the like. But, this? This one had my full, undivided attention.
The pace of this documentary was one that easily kept me engaged and those involved with the case - specifically speaking in regards to the internet vigilantes - spoke well and explained near all you needed to know about their sides of the story. Baudi, especially, has an active voice that keeps you aware.
Despite popular belief, the documentary doesn't show you anything overtly gruesome in regards to the animals nor the victim (Jun Lin) that Luka murdered. They do explain it in moderate detail, so if you are a person who finds cruelty to animals and/or humans an act you can't bear to have described, it may not be a good fit for you.
The one issue I have with this, which is not at all a fault of the director's, is Ms. Yourkin's addition. She's his mother. Of course, she's going to defend her son, but in all honesty? He doesn't deserve it. I'm glad they tried to give her a voice, perhaps at least for her sake, but dismissing what he did to Jun Lin is just... it doesn't belong.
All in all, if you're looking for a first-time true crime documentary, intending to dip your toes into the genre, I suggest this one. Vehemently. And I hope that I can find others with a similar feel as this series.
