An ambitious production which included many sub-themes from Wells’ other novels. Unfortunately these novels and the ideas contained therein are rarely read these days. Along with “Time Machine”, “War of the Worlds” remains fairly popular and so after some film/tv versions, the recent mini-series would have been watched by many who know Wells’ book and had their own mental picture of the action, the settings and characters. As I remember, there was a degree of optimism at the end, the alien invaders having been defeated by Earth’s tiniest creatures: bacteria, optimism which was played down in this version. There was a degree of irony in the successful growing of a “crop”, something that Matt Damion as “the Martian” had to focus his mind on to survive being stranded on Mars.
