I thoroughly enjoyed the tv series but was apprehensive about the film. And I was right! Of course, the costumes and décor are a delight but the 7 or 8 sub plots, stuffed in to pad out the main theme of a royal visit, were dealt with in a such a shallow manner that it was impossible to engage with either the characters or their many contrived problems.
