Lots of people calling this regressive and hence it shouldn't have been made or broadcast. I have the complete opposite take. The show portrays regressive outdated concepts and if those were eliminated it wouldn't have been realistic. It should make you cringe every time a bunch of superficial regressive stuff happens on the show because that is how backwards match-making as still practiced today is. If anything, showing the absurdity via a popular medium is a great way to get society to talk about how wrong it is.
Also, the show demonstrates this perfectly via an independent and successful self-made businesswoman, Ankita, who has a lot going for her but had been repeatedly told she has little worth because she is overweight and not "fair skinned". Her arc in the show clearly conveys that the match-making system is ludicrous as she is a catch but the conventional system completely overlooks her.
Finally, selecting well off people in the US and flat-out rich families in India helps point out that this isn't just some small section of Indian society but applies to educated and well-to-do parts of the Indian diaspora.
