I have been a hospital Director for many years and I enjoy Doctor shows. This is one of the worst I have seen and it is because of the character (not the actor) MAX. He does NOT come across with any leadership skills as far as running a hospital is concerned. It would work if he was a summer camp director but the issues of a hospital are so much more complex. The RESIDENT presently is closer to the truth, although not entirely. Both the RESIDENT and the GOOD DOCTOR focus on a group within the hospital and this makes it more authentic. The problems of the Hospital administrators are touched on and this gives relevance to the issues that arise within hospitals on a day to day basis.
But the MAX character is supposed to be above everything and be captain of the ship but also represent the problems of the hospital to management.
The handling of the relationship and the move to London also defies logic. A hospital director views the hospital like a child that he/she will nurture and help develop. To displace to another country and give up on this Hospital that the other Doctors have given up lucrative practices for doesn't make sense. in my real world, I would give the guy his papers and say Thanks but I need someone who will give his blood and guts to make this place work.
I think the writers and showrunners are not capitalizing on the situation. New Amsterdam (Bellevue!). What a great setting. Yet so unconvincing. A hospital like that should have Doctors who are legend, god like (in their own minds) and leaders in their field.
Come on. Shape up New Amsterdam team.
