People clearly don’t understand the game, which is why they’re bombarding it with terrible reviews. This review will contain spoilers below, so stop here if you want to try the game out yourself.
I don’t believe the game and the developers attempt to make you empathize for Abby, nor does it try to make you understand why she did what she did. The reason it makes you play as Abby is to show just how similar her story and experience is to Ellie, and why she starts to feel the same rage and anger and vengeance that Ellie does.
This ending wasn’t like part 1, and I’m glad it wasn’t. The ending itself is something I can’t explained but it matches the kind of game and story that it was trying to tell. I’m satisfied. I enjoyed the game. The game wasn’t “Wow that was such a great game I’d play it over and over and over just like I did with part one.” And yet, I’m still thinking about it and trying to figure out what everything meant and already started a New Game Plus.
There’s no doubt there’s going to be a part 3. There has to be, with this kind of ending. There’s not enough closure to the characters, but it ties the loose ends of the story it’s telling.
The one thing I DON’T like about the game is that the gameplay begins to become repetitive after 20 hours of stealth and collecting resources and running around trying to find a brick/bottle. The first one could be handled at around 12-15 hours of gameplay, but 20-30 hours of very similar gameplay to tell two different stories was a bit tedious.
This game wasn’t as great as part 1, nor was the story, but I’m sure that wasn’t what the developers were intending. They wanted the story to stick with us beyond the game, and for me, it did that.
