I don’t usually take to Social media to pan a show or movie but I have to make an exception for the new Netflix series Firefly Lane.
I am sure part of this is the fact that I really enjoyed the novel by Kristin Hannah about two best friends whose story is told over a forty year period. I would recommend the novel to anyone who likes a good story told by a great storyteller.
Kristin Hannah is an executive producer on the Netflix adaption and, frankly, I cannot believe any author would allow their work to be so torn apart and put back together so poorly. Of course any adaption of a book to the screen always requires some changes but the changes incorporated into the character, the plot, and the relationships are so different that the entire thrust of the novel is lost in the translations. The characters retain their names and place of residence in Seattle. After that the TV series might have been a complete rewrite. Whole portions of the novel are written out while totally new and unneeded plot lines are added.
Add to that the extremely annoying timeline that bounces back and forth on at least four times looking back and forward. I feel if you have not read the novel you will be completely confused. But if you have read the novel you will be completely disappointed.
My suggestion. Read the book but avoid the series.
