Joker is brilliant. I just read a lukewarm review from the Washington Post that criticized the movie’s “darkness”. Pfff. Sorry if that lady was expecting Caesar Romero, but I don’t go into a Joaquin Phoenix movie expecting anything less than a deep, intimate portrayal of the human psyche. Phoenix does not disappoint. As he often does, he takes you a little deeper than you were expecting and sometimes gets so real and deep that it becomes uncomfortable. That’s what makes it so good. If you want a comic book movie, maybe this isn’t for you. I don’t read comic books because I’m an adult and this is an adult movie. It takes a fantasy world concept and asks “in the real world, what would this look like?” And BAM! POW! KABOOM! They deliver in a big way.
