I had great recommendations to watch this anime.. and I was completely disappointed. They try so hard to be a think piece, or a cerebrally stimulating story, that it just comes off as the author/creator stroking & patting themself on the back for what amounts to the intellectual depth of the teletubbies… people comparing this to death note are delusional and should stop watching anime… as that comparison is utterly disrespectful to death note. The visuals were almost stunning.. the animation quality was good… but I couldn’t stomach past episode 3 because the overall story was… well.. trash. Even if the animation was 3 times better.. I wouldn’t keep watching it. If I could give it “0” stars.. I would.

I’m going to start this with, I know that technically it’s target audience is like 12-15yrs old.. but I thought I’d give the show a chance because it was “Highly recommended” by a couple of friends, and a lot of random people who would overhear conversations about anime I’d have with people or by anime review outlets. So I’m giving it a 1star (at best) only because the actual quality of animation is pretty “good/cool”, and some.. only some of the characters are note worthy. Many of the character designs and powers looked/seemed rushed, half baked, or were just…. Not good. The anime hypes up the school as “being the best one” and most of the powers of the students are just well, completely underwhelming. Like “how did they get into this school”?! I get that they were probably trying to come up with some very unique or rarely seen powers for their characters, but it’s like they really just dug some of these out of the dumpster when trying to apply them. It left me not remembering 99% of the characters’ names because I was unable to get invested. The Pacing Sucked. As a watcher older than 18, the overall pacing, storyline, exhibition, plot, and character development.. were just lacking in almost every way. Each episode felt like over an hour long.. just to arrive at no real outcome, and there were little-to-no intellectually stimulating moments. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever written a bad review for an anime or movie before except for that train wreck of a live action movie avatar the last airbender. I feel like I would have been able to just go about watching the next anime without saying anything about my hero academia.. but I feel it was just So Hyped up, and I was being flooded with all these “amazing” recommendations… that it left me utterly uninspired. So yea.. I really wasn’t trying to be mean to this show, but I just really didn’t care for it.
