I approve of movies that are both entertaining and ‘about something.’ The feminist ideas present an argued are pretty old, but the hyper animation of them was a lot of fun. There is a lot of hamming it up, especially by Ryan Gosling, but hey, it was in the script. Margo Robbie was great. I think this movie needs to play in China and the Muslim world.

Mythic old west. Not realistic, but utterly absorbing. Great lineup of wonderful cast. Set decoration hard to beat. Unforgettable soundtrack. Usual macho Peckinpah tropes, but you go with it because it’s so beautiful.

As a refugee who long ago fled N. Texas, I was deeply impressed with the depth of research and knowledge Proulx put into her effort with this book. I cannot imagine that she did not spend long weeks and months exploring from Dalhart to Mobeetie... or even New Mobeetie to root out the humor and humanity of this flyover patch of almost tamed territory. Babtists and bobwar, rayroads, and windmills, it's all here. Highly recommended.

Now (IS) Thank you for this review. I read both editions of Willard Bain's book and was affected deeply at the time. I was sure this was part of the new dawn. Well it was, but every day is a new dawn, and darned if each of them don't look a lot like the last one. I didn't know Willard Bain lived in Corte Madera when I did. I didn't know that he had died. I just know his book and how it made me feel, then and now.
