Being Japanese myself, I genuinely appreciate that there are still movies like this being produced and shown to the world. In my high school in Japan, the Nanjing Massacre was only mentioned in one sentence in the entire history textbook, with my teacher spending only a few minutes on it in class. Consequently, I did not know anything about the Massacre until I started making friends with people from China.
Nowadays, I see more and more Japanese refusing to accept the true historyโthe incredible atrocity their ancestors inflicted upon other humansโand I believe the governmentโs erasure of that part of history from textbooks plays a big role in this.
I hope more and more movies like this will be made, slowly opening the eyes of the Japanese people to the true history, so that we can learn from the past and make sure we do not repeat the same mistakes again.
On behalf of the nation, I am very sorry for the suffering of the Chinese people, and I hope that one day we will truly become โtomodachi.โ
