This book follows the journey of a courageous, sensitive, hero-of-a-little-boy and his battle with cancer. One cannot help but fall in love with Alexander as you read through the pages of this book. Alex will leave a lasting impression (in Afrikaans we have a saying: "Hy trap diep spore in jou hart" which roughly translates to "He leaves footprints on your heart") as he reminds you about the value of life, love and nature. Alex, through the suffering, keeps his cheerful spirit and turns his focus on those around him. He even delivers a speech of confidence at his school about his condition, the chemotherapy he will be undergoing and why there is no reason to fear him when his hair starts falling out.
The journey starts where his parents realize that something is seriously wrong, Alex has not been himself, to the frustrations of finding a proper diagnosis, treatment and care. It is a heartfelt story of communities and people coming together to support Alex and his family. It is a story of hope in the face of adversity.
Alex's dad, Jeff W. Goodwin, is the author of the book and does a great job conveying this story, detailing the emotions, challenges and fears felt by Alex and his family. It is a story of importance, creating awareness around the shortfalls in medical practice and shedding light on this rare kind of cancer, Ewing sarcoma.
Everyone should read it!
