What first starts out as a page turner becomes overwrought and tedious. Cal lets himself be conned by his unscrupulous brother even though he knows that his brother, Frank, is out to destroy and financially ruin him. I wondered how someone so smart can be so naive and feckless. By the end, Cal gets away with his life but loses everything else. Having Frank win is a nihilistic way to end the story and I feel frustrated that I invested the time I did reading the book. I felt conned by the author in the same way Cal was conned by Frank.
