I thought the story was weak (with huge gaps), the main character lacked presence and vigour and the acting by most of the cast (especially Denzel) was below average. Some of the editing was shockingly out of sync and misplaced. They destroyed a classic with this one. I did enjoy seeing the colosseum filled with sea water and sharks though (probably the best thing about the movie).
