The trailer makes it look more interesting than it is. The plot is weakened by some random subplot that gets discarded once a fight clubesque scene happens. There is no revenge or closure (promised by the trailers). And the "depth" feels forced as a way to substitute a John Wick revenge.
It feels like they took a name brand's beverage bottle, emptied it, placed in tap water, and said it was good to go. Save for the movie is Nicolas Cage as always is amazing. I hate animal deaths. I hate it even more when it is handled as a throwaway mention and then nothing is done for the animal rights or anything.
The fake depth comes from the half hearted messages of handling grief and life. There are better movies out there that tackle this. Another fake depth is how not everything gets justice. We see that better in news everyday. Also, you can forgive people and not repeat the mistake to associate again (fake depth) and you can forgive and still want justice for the wrong.
There is no tension built to justify the movie length.
This review might have gone differently if the genre wasn't thriller and it wasn't marketed as an action revenge thriller at that. The marketing and genre selection team was high for this movie or something.
I wanted to like it but I was left bored and feeling ripped off. Very underwhelming.
