So I've watched every episode released, usually within a day of it being released. Here is my honest review as an Avid LOTR fan.
4/5 stars debatably 3/5. Here is why. The show ITSELF is good. It's got great acting, strong story work, and a good set. I am really enjoying the show for what it is, its own, unique, show.
This show, while good, I can see why the criticism. I am really enjoying the show, and will continue to watch it, HOWEVER, I do not feel it can be rightfully called part of the LOTR universe. outside of names being the same, and the story following the older generate of characters such as durin, gal-galad, Galadril, etc. There just is NOTHING that makes it feel like LOTR. Yes, the black elf is a bit weird, not because there is a black person in the show, but because the books were very clear the elves were a PALE race that were so white, they'd appear to be glowing. you can see the problem here. That aside, he's a cool character, just not fitting to LOTR lore. With that said, if your gonna make him an elf... MAKE HIM AN ELF. I must admit, the Jackie Chan scenes are just cringe. Yes elves are nimble, quick and accurate, but they also were amazing with their daggers. If he gets into one more melee fight with no weapon and just Jackie Channing his way through the fight I think im gonna lose it lol.
The struggle between light, and dark. Galadril shows it, outside of this... its no where... I see where they are trying to show it, but they are falling short. LOTR was always very serious about its power struggle between light and dark and the over looming aura of doom. where is that? where is the hope? the despair? the corruption? the struggle to stay strong against the overwhelming darkness? Boromir is rolling in his grave. :)
All in all, I love the show. its a great show. its great for what it is, however it is NOT lord of the rings. It lacks any and all feel of Lord of the rings by a landslide, if not for the names being accurate to lord of the rings, you wouldn't be able to tell it had anything to do even remotely with the lord of the rings universe. The feel just is not there.
