I romped through this book in two days. I found it a fascinating blend of the magic realism of Gabriel García Marquez and the whimsicality of Louis de Bernières. How much of it is true, I have no idea, but that didn't matter, it is such an absorbing narrative, with so many colourful characters. The author's tenacity is extraordinary.
