At best, this offers a lot of bombastic spectacle, though arguably not much more than any other similarly bloated CGI superhero blockbuster. The slower paced mythological space opera of the originals is replaced by a ridiculously caffeinated rush through painfully unoriginal, hollow fetch quests and macguffins (JJ even borrows from the Goonies with the doubloon thing). I think JJ is great at doing an impression of visionary creatives like Spielberg...but he is not in their league whatsoever, and devoid of any original ideas himself, it would seem. And, as such, this film, as mentioned, will please you only if you can dump your standards and enjoy, big, dumb fun. Because the plot holes, ridiculous logic, and video game plotting make it an absolute mess. And the Emperor story is...ridiculous. I mean, in ROTJ he was chucked down a vast tunnel to his death, in the death star that was then blown up minutes later. No one seems to mind this unbelievable slight of hand, that renders the victory of the rebels in Return of the Jedi utterly pointless. Another reason this film fails on its attempts to finish the saga. This is another poorly constructed, superficial, unoriginal style over substance film of the sort we see far too much of these days. The Mandalorian is the last hope for Star Wars now.
