Just got home and had mixed opinions. First of all, I am not a youngster and don't give a "flip" about all of the "cinema theatric" stuff. Star swirls, space waves and Fire balls for 3 or 4 minutes gave me a chance to run to the can. I also didn't like the way that it left everything out about Oppenheimer's background. We see his brother, we see where he borders on being a sociopath because he was going to kill his condescending professor so there is not a lot of sympathy for him later on. Of course, they are going to show a scene where a woman is riding him naked and then gets kinky and trash like that. It gave NOTHING to the plot whatsoever, but such are movies today.
My 39 year old daughter, who took me to see it, thought it was great and I chuckled when she said that. I still think that the original True Grit is one of the greatest movies ever along with The Searchers. She would fall asleep if she were to watch those. So, the first 30 minutes and the last hour were only okay to me, but the middle part, the part that I was really interested in seeing, the Manhattan Project and Trinity was very good. The part where someone wants to destroy him is not covered sufficiently for me to get into it.
It will get the Academy Award for Best Picture, there's not much doubt about that. It will also win several other big awards, but I am not that much into awards. I know what I like and this was not on that list. Artistically, I'm sure it will be viewed that way as one of the greatest since Citizen Kane (which I have as one of the greatest movies ever BTW) but I didn't see that.
