Was it well-written? ehh, probably not. Did I enjoy reading it? Admittedly, I sorta did.
I remember reading this book as a 6th grader (sidenote: not an appropriate book for 6th graders), and reading it mostly in one day because I was intrigued to know what happened next. I don't have a good enough attention span to enjoy something very long and drawn-out, even if it's good, but this kept me well entertained because there was drama, and it wasn't so long and detailed that I got bored.
Parts of the book did feel a bit rushed, for instance the death of certain characters. In the part of the book where a character dies, which is obviously dramatic and also traumatic for the characters, the emotions shown to be felt by the characters felt very forced, even though, of course, their emotions were justified. They were just presented in a very sort of in-your-face way that made it difficult to take them seriously.
The drama between Frenchie and Rose at the end also felt quite forced and artificial, to a point where it became annoying.
Another thing about the book is that it had intimate scenes between the young characters. I don't remember it getting too graphic, probably because they were minors, but I do remember being made annoyed and uncomfortable by the consistent use of the word "grinding". Maybe I'm just remembering it wrong? I also think the book used the word "trudging" a lot, or something like that, and it annoys me when books use the same word over and over again.
Another thing is that a lot of the characters and their story was just one big trauma dump. I wish there was more to their stories. The super bad stuff in their past were really the only interesting things about them.
The main character also didn't really seem to have a personality at all.
Many parts of the book were dramatic, but it felt like if the drama was the juice of an orange slice; it was only half-squeezed, but exaggerated so it came off as cringy and unserious.
At the same time, I found characters, though cliche, somewhat amusing, and as a bored middle schooler was still taken by the drama, though wished parts of the story could have had more detail.
