I am a long time fan of Critical Role and a backer of the kickstarter. The best parts of Critical Role are the incredible roleplay moments, and Matt Mercer's ability to create a deep and interesting world. These are so good that people often accuse the live stream of being scripted. However, as we can see with their scripted show...this is not the case at all.
Spoilers ahead.
Unfortunately, much like the livestream itself recently, the show suffers from an over abundance of immature dick and poop jokes. I get wanting it to be a show for adults but then it just feels like it was designed by a 12 year old boy who grew up in a household without parents.
The pacing also feels off. The first two episodes were so poorly written. We get no time to meet the npcs we are supposed to care about before they are gone. The dead kid is so contrived - simply a plot point to give the party a reason to care. The party then goes from worthless nobodies to dragon slaying council members thanks to the power of friendship I guess?
It's just a shame. This had the potential to be such a great adult animated show that brought more people into DnD and Critical Role. I won't even recommend this to fans, let alone people unfamiliar with the source material.
