My wife and I find that almost all the BBC crime dramas are far better crafted than most of the USA programs. Shetland is a perfect example. It is not something you can just watch an episode from the middle of a season and instantly understand why it is so good. You need to let the characters develop and grow. They are far more complex than a single episode can portray.
Also I happen to love the different accents on the BBC. I find the phrases and terms they use on all the different BBC shows very interesting and entertaining on there own! Yes I use Closed Captioning but even that doesn't answer all the questions.
I frequently pause and use Google to really understand the terms.
Shetland is really well written and the lead actor is very believable and very different than a USA series lead.
