Let me start by saying that I don’t normally write movie reviews or reviews of any kind, really. In fact, this is my first, so go easy on me because I’m a mama of four under the age of 6 and movie watching is my “me” time so I do not take it lightly.
This film is phenomenal. I know that’s a strong word, but trust me it deserves it. Let me explain.
Emergency touches on, a few, of the main social issues we face today such as racism and social injustice to true friendship and morality. College students Kunle, Sean and Carlos go on an entertaining journey after finding a young white girl intoxicated and unconscious in their predominately black off-campus housing.
RJ Cyler and Donald Elise Watkins put no shame in their acting game. In fact, the whole cast does a great job. You really find yourself lost in the plot as it thickens and one can genuinely see the view from all angles (which in turn helps to us to unite as a society because what we truly need is understanding and empathy from one another) and as the story plays out the director does just that.
Towards the end, feelings are validated and we’re reminded that sometimes it’s okay to not feel okay while also coming full circle on seeing perspective through the lens of others and realizing that’s were healing begins.
Lastly, I just want to note that I was pleasantly surprised that the film was kept clean, other than a bit of R rated language. So much so that you can comfortably sit through this with your age appropriate teenager and know that you don’t have to have the uncomfortable cringe moments of sex scenes and naked girls around every corner. Let’s just say that the producers decision to keep it classy helps to hold the weight of the serious issues.
So all-in-all, my husband and I got a few laughs in and held back a few tears while enjoying this film.
Emergency is a no-brainer. You won’t regret it.
