I love the show, but was so disappointed at the scene where one of the characters had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This has not been the way the treatment has been administered for several decades. By the 1990s, the treatment involved putting the patient to sleep. Showing this scene is similar to showing someone having their appendix removed with no anesthesia. It is simply not how the treatment is administered. ECT can be very effective for people with treatment resistant depression. Scenes like this scare people unnecessary and perpetuate false beliefs about this treatment.
