Others have enshrined Mc D's performance and attributes of great film making. But for me the the background of U.S. Western Pastoral reifies and defines the stories of Nomadland. Pastoral in the Ecclogues includes death but as something that is accepted in the eternal but changing landscapes. The landscapes in Nomadland are like the characters/people: vast and startling. Coming to terms with western Nebraska, the Badlands, or the deserts of NV, NM, and UT is the same as knowing Swankie or Linda May. The American West must be viewed differently than an English Garden and so must the lives of the Nomads.
