If you're a fan of the book, you might find this adaptation disappointing. It's common to trim secondary characters and even change genders, but altering the story to make the characters narcissistic and the core relationship dysfunctional, rather than a core anchor in the book is a disservice to the author.

This move suffers from "implied" bait/switch. We went because we saw Ferrell on Colbert and it was setup as a comedy scene. This is NOT A Comedy.... Spoiler alert.... It is all about a marriage going "downhill" after the husband panics as an avalanche approaches the family while on a chalet deck and runs inside. The rest of the story is the seething disappointment of the family as it comes to terms with "dad bailing" - including dad. It ends basically with them "staying together for the family" and the last shot is snow coming from the roof and both jumping out of the way... As if to may some point about anyone can panic, but it is way too little to late. It opened on Valentine's day and if you took your date to see it, my condolences..
