It was certainly interesting. Mia Goth’s voice throughout echoing the military lingo for MAYDAY is haunting. **SPOILERS** I found Goth’s character and performance to be more interesting than the protagonist even from the first scene we are introduced to both in the hotel and see what they were before they .. transported?? To the island? Or purgatory? Heaven? Hell? I’m not sure honestly. It was a bit foggy exactly what was going on and that’s where the problem lays. In some moments they insinuate that they have died in some way and now are on the island “in a war” with men, their own personal traumas and abusers from their lives, whiles also luring sailors to the islands(?) aka their deaths, using the MAYDAY distress signal in soft voices on the radio nonstop like sirens.. Goths character seems to be the leader of the island yet when the main character (she was so boring I can’t remember her name
Sorry) wants to leave the island because she falls in love with a sailor through the radio, they let her know they will all die. So it leads the viewer to believe this island is actually in the main characters head the whole time.. or is it?? I have no clue. if the plot was more clear as to what was happening I think the film was be much more enjoyable. As much as it was beautiful, it was messy. Definitely has some SuckerPunch vibes meets Lord of the Flies meets Wristcutters: A Love story. Mia Goth really outshines all the other performances.
