It's not yet clear if there is going to be a Season 2 of "Based On A True Story" or not, but running this back for another 8 episodes is kind of pointless. After one season, the writers have effectively painted themselves into a corner in which there literally is only one way. out. The final episode of this show if there is a Season 2 HAS TO END with this entire journey of the three main characters turning out to be all a dream and NOT a "true story." If you made it to episode 8 of season 1, the husband/wife team actually start picking out names for their soon-to-be-born child. They are doing it while burying a murdered body in a hole in a tennis/pickleball court. The point is, if this is NOT a dream and the husband/wife are living this in real time, then the child will be born and be parentless as both will be in prison for all the things they've done to aide and abet the serial killer. That makes for horrific TV ... especially when this show has a comedic element to it. A baby being born and having both parents going to prison is miserable story-telling and clearly that can't happen. But the only way it can't happen at this point is for it all to be a dream. There is no non-prison alternative at this point in the show. Decades ago, this technique I believe was used on a comedy sit-com called "Newhart" in which his entire many-season show turned out in the final episode to be just a dream. That's what we're going to get here. And they will become wealthy and wise by creating a podcast called something like "Based On A Dream That Felt Like A True Story." Or something like that. Problem is, at this point, that's the resolution to this story, and once you realize that the show's stars are NOT in real jeopardy of prison or being killed by "serial killer Matt," it sucks all the energy out of the show. Writers needed to be better. Or at least more creative.
