First Season was well scripted, acting superb and the plot was tight. Very compelling and in the best traditions of British crime drama doing a Canadian Ozark. Could not wait for the second series.
Second series was as good as the first and generally got better. One was left wondering about a couple of plot gaps. What happened to the taxi driver? Didn't he want his taxi back? Did he get to keep the Police SUV?? Did the Police mind being down an SUV for a while? Did they ever get it back? But tangential quibbles forgotten due to the riveting nature of the series. Pathos, humor, suspense, etc.
We get to the last episode of season 2, and what the heck? it all sort of falls apart. The plot becomes inconsistent and has gaps so wide that carefully developed credulity over two series cannot help but fall through. Have they suddenly got the Dr Who screen writers on the job? Have they suddenly decided to "have fun" with it? Homage to High Noon tropes seems to have occurred without deference to what might have been expected of such professional and feared bad guys.
There is now a clear break in the contract between viewer and screenplay writer - they changed the genre on us mid stream. How dare they!
Due to the investment already made, I stuck around for series 3, but grudgingly having to accept the new regime to see how it ends. Logic has been thrown out, and we are now looking at a piece of artwork (cartoon??) in which the still gripping characters suck the theatrical marrow out of each scene or backdrop. Just as well the Liverpool Police were so utterly useless, otherwise the plot would have been severely impeded. The last episode is a complete unravelling, sort of Tarantino meets Thelma and Louise. But why??
If I had the power, I would make the screenplay writers go back to the penultimate episode of Series 2 and start again from there. Two advantages - one, they could make it much better and more plausible without much effort, and they might have the option of a Series 4. Quick, do it now, before the cast gets noticeably older!
