The plot is bland and boring. There is little to no character development and it substitutes content with CGI, graphics and cinematography. However, I did like the "attempt" of the film crew to put some research into the settings for Mulan 2020. (e.g Mulan's home which is actually an accurate Fujian Tu lou. A defensive home built in parts of Southern China by mainly Han Chinese speakers of the Hakka dialect to protect themselves from looters or bandits.) Sadly, the opposite is true for the costumes in general in this movie. The colorful clothes worn by the Hakka people in the Tu lou are a tragic contrast to the historically accurate Han clothing for commoners or peasants which were mostly in cooler and plainer shades. Overall, the movie was a big let-down and is overly hyped.
