As a person who has not read the book, but is a sci fi fan, this adaptation is disappointing as a sci fic show. The casting, as a lot of other reviewers point out, is way off and very unintelligent. Firstly, too many good looking, type A women. In particular, the Nano start up scientist, Eiza González, was terrible and a real caricature of a female start up CEO type. Marlo Kelly as Tatiana is again too good looking and so are the other women. that makes this adaptation very soap operaish.
The scripting was bad - very bland and uninteresting. I think they could have capitalized on Brit humour since they have relocated it to the UK. The show moves both too fast but feels slow. Was it necessary to synopsize this very long novel to 8 episodes? It could have been done with more suspense and build up in say, 15 episodes.
So, overall a miss for sci fic. We really lack good sci fic shows to watch these days. This one unfortunately does not look as though it will change the trend. The science was missing, even for a non scientist like me. I was quite looking forward to more physics and in general more nerdiness from the Oxford 5. Scientists are not like them. People who specialize in an area are much more 'nerdy' and have physics type jokes. all that would have helped characterization.
Still it was watchable, so going with 4 rating as I feel that it deserves to be seen by more from the source material perspective.
