As a hardcore Pokémon fan, one thing that I was excited for were the Pokémon battles. I ended up with a trip to the zoo. Don’t get me wrong, the visuals were breathtaking and beautiful, but there wasn’t enough being done with them. I’d even say that the action was slightly underwhelming. Ryan Reynolds performance as pikachu was really enjoyable and sparked a lot of emotion. The human character development (for one character in particular) was a bit rushed and forced. The movie focuses around a few key Pokémon and leaves out the rest as the background. The ones that did get more than 15 seconds onscreen were developed really well. I also really enjoyed how they went into depth and detail of the lore. Overall, I enjoyed this first edition of what I hope will be a large cinematic universe. If you’re new or have just gotten into the series, this is the movie for you, if you’re a hardcore Pokémon nerd like myself, not so much.
